How it works
The calculator first finds the number of complete calendar months between the birth date and the reference date. It then separates that value into complete years and months and counts the remaining calendar days. This avoids approximations based on 365-day years.
Dates such as January 31 and February 29 need month-end handling because not every month contains the same numbered day. The calculation anchors to a valid calendar date before counting the remainder, which keeps leap-year and short-month results stable.
Japanese forms may ask for 年齢, 満年齢 or an age as of a stated date. Enter that stated date, then verify the result against the issuer's instructions before submission.
Frequently asked questions
What does full age mean in Japan?
Full age, 満年齢 (man nenrei), starts at zero on the date of birth and increases as birthdays are completed. It is the ordinary age used on current forms.
Is Japanese full age different from international age?
For normal form-filling, it is the same completed-years concept used in many countries. The Japanese label 満 distinguishes it from the traditional counted-age system.
What is counted age, or kazoedoshi?
Counted age begins at one at birth and adds one every New Year. It still appears in traditional events such as yakudoshi, but it is not the default age for modern administrative forms.
Can I calculate age on a past filing date?
Yes. Set the reference date to the application, examination, contract or enrollment date. The result shows the age on that exact day rather than only today’s age.
How are February 29 birthdays handled?
The calculation uses real calendar months and valid month-end dates. It does not divide total days by 365, so leap years and different month lengths are handled consistently.
